The nearly totally accurate story of the Farnham VHF Group....
Once upon a time (in the early '80s) there were three
young, keen radio amateurs who thought they could make the world a better place
(or something like that). They decided to start a radio club and provide central
southern England (and beyond) with a fine 70cm radio repeater.
One of the amateurs (G8UVF) could write so he became secretary.
One of the amateurs (G8VWH) could count so he became treasurer.
One of the amateurs (G8HFE) liked to get other people to do things so he became Chairman.
Well a great deal of time went by and nearly everything changed.
Considerable hurdles were overcome and delays endured to get a license for 'FN.
The site was on MOD land, without electricity (fortunate really... it was largely
underwater!) and required considerable refurbishment. The previously unused RB15
was allocated to 'fit us in'. Several very good junk sales were held generating enough
revenue to get the group going (Thanks Storno, now absorbed by Motorola, for your
quality 'junk').
The secretary (G8UVF) gave up writing and became Chairman.
A new secretary (G4EPX) took over. He learnt how to write, and with assistance
learnt about how to string repeaters together. He's still practising with GB3FN
(70cms), GB3FM (23cms) and GB3FX (6m) so far, one day he'll get one right...... He's
also responsible for GB3SN (2m), and has been promised a new identity in a different
country when they all go wrong together.....
Just about the only thing that didn't change was that G8VWH remained treasurer
despite several attempts at evading the job (all I have left to try is fraud
and / or a long holiday, perhaps Rio?).
Over the years, others have come along and made huge contributions; all those
who helped extort raise the money to start the group and keep
it running in the early years, and the recent extortion kings (Keith, G6SPR), all
those who have taken life in hands (or maybe left brains behind) to climb the
tower (with special thanks to Norman G8PLL, the present rigger, who has definitely
had the greatest problems of all with the 6m groundplane), all those that spend
time and effort fixing, mending, installing, rewiring (special thanks for Andy
G4VDF for many odd hours call outs), and all those not mentioned here but
honoured by the operation of some dubious looking equipment held together with
rusty bolts on site.......
Facts from Dave (G4EPX), folk-lore from Sheridan (G8VWH).
